Controller (partial or part-time) - Friends Southwest

Friends Southwest (FSW) is seeking to hire a Controller to join our staff on a part-time basis. The Controller will report to the Executive Director. While a specific skill set of business acumen is necessary, a love for the Church and serving others is also important.

 

The Controller is responsible for directing all day-to-day finance and general business functions of Friends Southwest. These functions include, but are not limited to, establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures; managing budgets and designated funds; preparing financial reports and presenting findings to the Executive Director and the CFO in Residence.

 

This part-time position allows for a portion of the job to be accomplished remotely if so desired. However, in-person participation as a team member in staff meetings and special events is required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/FUNCTIONS

  • Oversee accounts payable, process invoices, and prepare journal entries as necessary. Deposit and code checks and online giving transactions.

  • Send bookkeeper report of where to credit all receivable monies (donations and payments).

  • Run/Batch online giving and transactions in church management software (Tithe.ly). Create invoices for retirement contributions and health insurance coverage.

  • Update workman’s comp to reflect pay changes.

  • Administrate Section 125 (FSA/Dependent Care).

  • Manage all payroll functions through Paychex in concert with the bookkeeper. Update all employee salaries and deductions when applicable.

  • Input all employee data into Paychex.

  • Run monthly reports for all bank accounts.

  • Help the bookkeeper reconcile bank statements monthly.

  • Manage the onboarding of new employees.

  • File all payroll paperwork, keeping files up to date.

  • Prepare monthly and year-end budget reports in concert with the bookkeeper.

  • Support bookkeeper in preparing 1099’s NEC preparation.

  • Keep files up to date for audit documentation needs and interface with external auditors during annual financial audit.

  • Keep secure HR and employment records and document changes.

  • Knowledge of pastor payroll and welfare exemptions is helpful.

This position is hybrid and part time. Friends Southwest is headquartered in Yorba Linda, CA

 

Friends Southwest Executive Director is charged with vetting candidates for this position with assistance from Jeff Davis of J. Davis & Associates. JDA will explore a broad network to suggest potential candidates. This search will include consideration of many names and subsequent review of resumes. When appropriate, candidates will be asked to provide a thorough vocational history, respond to a questionnaire, and to have a video interview with Jeff Davis. Those holding the most promise will then be interviewed in person by the Executive Director. Next, references and backgrounds will be checked, degrees verified. When a preferred candidate is identified, the candidate will participate in a final interview as well as meet with the FSW leadership team.
